The Ultimate Michigan Summer Road Trip Guide

When people think of summer beach getaways, they usually picture the coastlines of California or the tropical shores of Florida. But those in the know share a little secret: Summers in Michigan rival anywhere in the world. While everyone else is arguing over which crowded ocean beach is best, we’re packing up the car for a trip Up North.

If you're putting together your summer road trip loop this year, here are our top five spots in the state to celebrate summer like a local.

Stop #1: Sleeping Bear Dunes

This iconic Michigan Lakeshore is known for its miles of sandy beaches, clear water, towering bluffs, and lush forests. The dunes, standing 450’ above Lake Michigan, make for spectacular views.

What to do: If you want to really work those leg muscles, try the Dune Climb. Looking for views without the intense workout? Hike the Empire Bluff Trail instead. The trail is low-impact, mostly shaded, and ends with a great view of the lake.

Local Tip: Drive the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive around sunset. Pull over at overlook #9 or #10. You can’t beat that view!

Stop #2: Torch Lake

Known as “The Caribbean of the North”, this road trip destination is known for its turquoise-blue water, and is perfect for a boat day. Its depth and unique limestone bottom gives it that iconic, picturesque color.

What to do: Rent a pontoon boat or a kayak. You really need to get out on the water to appreciate it.

Local Tip: On hot weekends, everyone anchors their boats at the sandbar on the south end of the lake to swim and hang out in waist-deep water.

Stop #3: Traverse City

Just down the road from the dunes is Traverse City. It sits right on the bay and has a great food and drink scene. The charming downtown also offers local boutiques and great antiquing spots.

What to do: Drive up either the Old Mission or Leelanau peninsulas. Both are packed with local wineries and cideries where you can hang out and look at the water.

Local Tip: Walk down Front Street for dinner, shopping, and ice cream. If you go in July, the National Cherry Festival will be in full swing, so expect some crowds.

Stop #4: Mackinac Island

Step back in time on Mackinac Island. This well-known summer spot is only accessible by ferry, and the first thing you'll notice is that there are no cars to be seen. Explore the island by walking, riding bikes, or taking horse-drawn carriages.

What to do: Rent a bike and ride the 8-mile loop around the outside of the island. It’s flat, easy, and follows the water the whole way.

Local Tip: Grab some of the famous island fudge, check out Arch Rock, and just hang out by the docks for a bit.

Stop #5: Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Cross the Mackinac Bridge into the Upper Peninsula for this picture-perfect road trip stop (pun intended). Pictured Rocks runs along Lake Superior and features massive sandstone cliffs with otherworldly colorful mineral streaks. Trust us, this one you have to see to believe.

What to do: Book a boat cruise out of Munising. You can hike along the cliffs, but seeing them from the water is the best way to see the caves and rock formations. Line up early to snag a spot on the upper deck of the boat to maximize views, especially on the sunset tour!

Local Tip: Check out some of the waterfalls in the area, like Munising Falls. Just a heads up: Lake Superior is always freezing, even in August, so swimming is not for the faint of heart.

Travel Hacks

State Park Pass: Make sure your Recreation Passport is renewed on your plate before you go so you can breeze into the trailheads.

Don't Forget: Check the Mackinac Bridge construction/traffic updates before you head north so you aren't stuck idling on I-75 for an hour.

Pack a hoodie: Michigan summer days are warm, but the nights near the lakes get pretty chilly.
